This 46-mile paved drive from Medina to Garner State Park crosses some of the most rugged parts of the Texas Hill Country. The drive, which is best taken in spring and fall because of pleasant weather conditions and an abundance in wildlife and plants, will take you through the Medina, Sabinal and Frio river valleys--three of the major river valleys in Texas. When you reach Garner State Park, enjoy hiking, biking, camping, swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking in the Frio River. You can also rent a cabin, enjoy a meal in the concession building and play miniature golf on the nearby course.
Big Bend National Park Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive takes you through wilderness on the north side of the Rio Grande River bordering Mexico. View both desert and mountain terrain and see many historic and geologic features. Some highlights include the Sam Nail Ranch, which provides shade and water for desert wildlife; the Sotol Vista Overlook, which provides breathtaking views of the entire western side of Big Bend National Park; and Tuff Canyon, a deep and narrow canyon carved out of soft volcanic ash. Big Bend National Park has over 300 miles of roads and also offers outdoor recreation, accommodations and dining.
Hill Country is a scenic area north of San Antonio comprised of 23 counties, which will take you through small towns like Bandera, Kerrville, Luckenbach, Marble Falls and Utopia. A driving tour of Hill Country will also take you to lakes, caves and interesting historic attractions. View exhibits at the Hill Country Museum; stay in a bed and breakfast; fish and swim in rivers and lakes; and dine in many restaurants along the way.
