Lake Travis is a man-made body of water that was created by damming the Colorado River. The lake winds through Texas Hill Country and its western point sits approximately 17 miles northeast of the state's capital city Austin. At its widest, the lake is 4.5 miles across. It spans 63.7 feet and features 270 miles of shoreline. Lake Travis is an ideal destination for water enthusiasts, though there are many other recreational opportunities available in the vicinity.
Lake Travis' clear waters attract a myriad of water sports enthusiasts. Visitors enjoy sailing, water skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing and windsurfing. Houseboats are popular throughout the lake, and can be rented from a number of private facilities.
The community of Lago Vista, situated on the north shore of Lake Travis, features a par 72 18-hole championship course. Nearby Highland Lakes course is also 18 holes, and considered a more challenging option. Also close to Lake Travis is the Lakeway Golf Club, which features two 18-hole courses.
Texas' state capital Austin is a vibrant city with a lively arts, food and social scene. The city holds countless treasures; some great options include the Mexic-Arte Museum, the Zilker Botanical Garden and the shops on South Congress Avenue.
Volente Beach Waterpark is a small, family-friendly recreational center open from April 30th through September 11th. The park features a beach-style lagoon, pools, water slides, kids' zone and ample shaded picnic areas. An on-site eatery, The Blu Parrot, offers food, spirits and live entertainment. The park is situated on the northern bank of Lake Travis.
Spicewood Vineyards is nestled within Texas Hill Country, approximately 35 miles northwest of Austin. The vineyards offers tours and tastings Wednesdays through Sundays and hosts ongoing special events including live entertainment and special dinners.
Among the predominant fish found in Lake Travis are a number of bass including Guadalupe, large mouth, white and striped, along with catfish and sunfish. Though trophy-sized fish are rare, the lake is a popular venue for sport and hobby fishermen.
