How to Travel the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway--which was constructed between 1935 and 1987--spans 469 miles connecting Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Passing through the states of Virginia and North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers travelers an opportunity to experience modern day Appalachian culture. To help you locate attractions, parks and overlooks, mile post markers are conviently placed along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

      Drive south from milepost 0 at Rockfish Gap, Virginia, to your first stop 1.0 miles away at Afton Overlook at 2054 ft. Be sure to bring your camera because the Blue Ridge Parkway includes over 200 scenic overlooks.

      Visit Skyline Caverns, the first natural wonder you will encounter along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Admission is $16 for adults and $8 for children, as of 2010. Military personnel, their families and members of auto clubs receive a $2 discount per adult and $1 off per child.

      Hike along a babbling brook at Otter Creek Recreation Area, located at mile 61, and the first of 12 parks and recreation areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Facilities include a campground, restaurant and gift shop.

      Strike a chord at the Blue Ridge Music Center, located in Galax, Virginia, near mile post 213. The Blue Ridge Music Center features a museum and daily concerts that begin at noon.

      Park and walk 1.6 miles along the Erwin's View Trail to Lineville Falls near mile marker 316. After your hike, learn about the history of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Lineville Falls Visitors Center.
