What Is the Blue Ridge Parkway?

"America's Favorite Drive," the Blue Ridge Parkway (also known as the Blue Ridge) is part of the United States National Park System. Located in the eastern part of the country, it connects the Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, covering numerous states as it winds through the easternmost part of the Appalachian Mountains.

  1. Location

    • The Blue Ridge Mountains are the easternmost range of the Appalachian Mountains. They run from northern Georgia and northwestern South Carolina, across western North Carolina, western Virginia and into West Virginia.

    Characteristics

    • The Blue Ridge Parkway is distinguished as an area in the world with one of the greatest variety in populations of wildlife and plants. The natural beauty of the mountains, valleys and piedmonts provide dramatic vistas. The highest point is Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet.

    Activities

    • Along with the natural beauty, the park, as a parkway, offers visitors a slow 469-mile drive along a paved road lined with trees, grassy areas and places to pull off to view natural settings. Staying in the park is possible at camping sites or lodges. Picnic areas and restaurant facilities are available.

The route features a museum, visitor centers and exhibits. Recreation activities are available, including trails for hiking.

    History

    • Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in 1935 as part of the public works program known as the New Deal. Completion of this project to join Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee was completed in 1983.

    Climate

    • The parkway is in a temperate latitude and is open year-round. However, temperatures can vary widely between the higher and lower elevations along the parkway.

    Considerations

    • Facilities in the park vary in their times of operation. A few facilities are open year-round, while others follow a more seasonal approach.

It is advised to take extra layers of clothing and emergency supplies when planning a trip in the park because of the varied weather conditions.
