How Researchers in Antarctica Are Funded

There is no traditional economy or employment market in Antarctica. The people living there—scientists, technicians, cooks, pilots, doctors—are employees of their home countries' government agencies or research institutions (e.g., NSF/USAP for the USA, BAS for UK, AWI for Germany).

They receive salaries, housing, food, medical care, and logistics from their sponsoring organization. No one "makes money" locally; there are no shops, taxes, or commerce. All funding flows from national science budgets. The Antarctic Treaty prohibits mineral exploitation, preserving the continent solely for science and peace.
