Why is the coast of Alaska ice free in winters?

The coast of Alaska is not ice free in winters. In fact, the waters around Alaska are covered in sea ice for much of the year. The only exceptions are the southeastern coast, which is protected by the Alexander Archipelago, and the Gulf of Alaska, which is warmed by the North Pacific Current.
