The Two Diomede Islands: Big and Little Diomede in the Bering Strait
The Bering Strait's two tiny islands are:
Big Diomede (Ratmanov Island) – Russian territory; easternmost point of Russia.
Little Diomede (Iŋaliq) – U.S. territory (Alaska); westernmost point of the United States.
They lie 3.8 km (2.4 mi) apart. The International Date Line runs between them, so Big Diomede is "Tomorrow Island" (~21 hours ahead). In winter, an ice bridge occasionally forms, but crossing is prohibited.
