What Time Is It in Antarctica? There's No Single Answer

Antarctica has no permanent residents, no native population, and no official time zone. The continent is dedicated to scientific research under the Antarctic Treaty System.

Research stations operate on the time zone of their home country or supply base. For example:

  • McMurdo Station (USA) uses New Zealand Time (UTC+12/13).
  • Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station (USA) also follows NZ time for logistical convenience.
  • Rothera (UK) uses GMT/BST.
  • Vostok (Russia) uses Moscow Time (UTC+3).

So "wake-up time" depends entirely on which station you're at and which clock it follows. The sun, meanwhile, rises once a year at the Pole.
