Despite being covered in ice, Antarctica is not suitable for recreational ice skating. The continent's surface is a massive, uneven ice sheet several kilometers thick, riddled with crevasses, pressure ridges, and constantly shifting ice. Coastal areas have sea ice and icebergs, but these are unstable and dangerous. There are no maintained rinks or smooth, safe surfaces for skating. Scientific stations may have small artificial ice areas, but for the general visitor, skating is impractical and hazardous.
