The most common way to get to McMurdo Station is by plane. There are two main airlines that offer flights to McMurdo:
a) Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE): ALE operates flights from Christchurch, New Zealand, to McMurdo Station during the summer season (October to March). These flights are typically scheduled once or twice a week and can be booked through ALE's website or through a travel agent.
b) United States Antarctic Program (USAP): The USAP also operates flights to McMurdo Station from Christchurch during the summer season. These flights are reserved for USAP personnel and their dependents.
2. By ship:
Another way to get to McMurdo Station is by ship. The USAP operates two research vessels that make regular trips to Antarctica, the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer and the R/V Laurence M. Gould. These ships depart from Punta Arenas, Chile, and make several stops along the Antarctic coast, including McMurdo Station.
3. By expedition cruise:
Several tour companies offer expedition cruises to Antarctica that include a visit to McMurdo Station. These cruises typically depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, and sail along the Antarctic Peninsula before making a stop at McMurdo Station.
