Where did all the water go before Snowy Mountains scheme?

Before the construction and implementation of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, the water from the Snowy River and other rivers in the area would flow directly into the ocean. The scheme was developed to divert and store this water for use in irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and town water supply.
