Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: Free Admission, Priceless Experience
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the few world-class spectacles that remains completely free to the public. No tickets, no reservations, no VIP tiers for the street-level experience.
How It Works
- Route: 2.5 miles from 77th St & Central Park West → Columbus Circle → Central Park South → 6th Ave → 34th St (Macy's Herald Square).
- Viewing: First-come, first-served on sidewalks behind police barricades. Prime spots (Central Park West, 6th Ave) fill by 6:00–7:00 AM (parade starts 8:30 AM).
- Grandstands: The only ticketed seating is the Macy's Grandstand at 34th St—tickets are not sold to the public. They are distributed via Macy's employee lottery, sponsor allocations, and media.
Pro Tips
- Dress in layers (Nov temps 30–50°F); bring hot drinks, snacks, portable chairs (allowed before barricades close).
- Bathrooms: Extremely scarce. Use hotels/cafés early; plan for 3+ hours without facilities.
- TV vs. Live: TV (NBC) shows better balloons/floats close-up; live gives scale, sound, crowd energy.
Bottom line: The parade is a civic gift. Your cost: early wake-up, subway fare, and patience.
