Take the group by train, carpool or flight up to upstate New York to see the fall foliage and enjoy the hills and mountains. Ideal locations, such as Buffalo, Albany, Ithaca, Syracuse and northern toward Niagara all offer gorgeous views and outdoor activities. Plan activities that help the group reconnect in the outdoors, such as hiking, pumpkin picking, wine tastings, cookouts, historical tours and horseback riding, all available in the Northeast.
Prolong the warm summer months by taking a trip south, if you live in the north, to Charleston, South Carolina. Check in at a bed and breakfast if you are a smaller group or a medium-sized hotel in the historic downtown. Explore the downtown area's statue-dotted parks and antebellum homes and buildings. The weather in October is generally 55 to 60 degrees, so you can explore the city and harbor area without an autumnal chill.
If your work group loves a glass of wine in the evenings, check out a weekend or weeklong trip in October to Napa Valley in Northern California. October is harvest time in wine country, when most wine producers come out to pick the grapes and begin to create wines for the next season. Book rooms at a vineyard inn or a nearby wine-country hotel. For co-workers not as wine inclined, the Napa area also offers fine art galleries, shopping, restaurants, cafes and hiking trails.
October is an ideal month to camp in the northeastern United States, for example. You and your work group can gather around the fire to roast marshmallows, enjoy wine, cook dinner and connect with each other out in nature, away from the drone of copy machines and computers. In the day, hike into local mountain or, if your near the ocean, spend a day at the beach and head back to the campsite at night.
