What signs were painted on barns of the Pennsylvania Dutch to ward off witches and bad luck?

Pennsylvania Dutch barns do not have any symbols to ward off witches or any superstitious symbols for bad luck. Some people think that hex signs on red barns are a part of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, however, that notion was actually started by a 20th Century artist and has spread due to misconceptions. Witches, bad luck, and superstitions are associated with witchcraft as portrayed in 1692 in Salem, MA not with the PA Dutch culture.
