How did the island Madagascar get his name?

Madagascar's name comes from the Italian, Isola di San Lorenzo 'Island of Saint Lawrence', and the second part from Mada, an early pronunciation of the Bantu term Modongo or Manongo with the same meaning. The name appeared on the world maps of the Italian cartographer Alberto Cantino in 1502, and of Johannes Ruysch in 1507.
