Why was lesotho colonized?

The British annexed the territory that would become Lesotho in 1868 in order to protect it from the expansionist ambitions of the neighboring Orange Free State and Transvaal Republic.

The annexation was controversial, as it was opposed by many Basotho people. However, the British eventually succeeded in suppressing resistance and establishing control over the territory.
