The species is sexually dimorphic, with males being larger than females and having longer canine teeth. Barbary macaques have grey-brown fur, a distinctive beard and mustache, and a long, prehensile tail.

Barbary macaques are social animals, living in troops of up to 100 individuals, consisting of several matrilineal family groups. The species is omnivorous, with its diet consisting of fruits, leaves, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates.

The Barbary macaque is a threatened species, with its population declining due to habitat loss, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the species and its habitat.
