What is the government in Sudan?

Sudan, officially known as the Republic of Sudan, has been under military rule since April 2019. After the Sudanese Armed Forces removed, detained, and subsequently sentenced President Omar al-Bashir to two years of house arrest, a Transitional Military Council (TMC) was established to temporarily transfer executive and legislative power to the Sudanese Armed Forces.

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2022, the power-sharing agreement between the civilian-led Transitional Government and the TMC resulted in the formation of a joint civilian-military Sovereign Council, which serves as the governing body of Sudan. The Sovereign Council is headed by General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, who is the Chairman of the Sovereign Council and the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The Sovereign Council is responsible for overseeing the country's transition period and facilitating a path toward democratic elections. In accordance with the 2019 constitutional declaration, the Sovereign Council will eventually hand over power to a fully civilian-led government after a three-year transition period, which was subsequently extended by an additional two years in 2022.

It's important to note that the situation in Sudan is complex and evolving, and there have been continuous political developments since my knowledge cutoff date. For the latest and most up-to-date information on Sudan's government and political structure, I recommend checking reliable news sources or official government websites.
