How to Get a Travel Passport to Ghana, West Africa

If you plan to travel to Ghana, a country on the western side of the African continent, you must have several different forms of documentation before you may enter the country. Without the correct documents, you may not enter Ghana, and you will be turned away at the customs desk in your port of origin. However, the documentation (such as a passport) is not difficult to obtain, and the visa required for admittance into Ghana is made available at the customs counter on our arrival.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local post office to get a passport application form (if you do not yet have a passport). Fill out all required information, such as your full name, address, Social Security number and birth date.

    • 2

Take your passport photograph at the post office. The post office offers this for a slight fee (although the fee does change depending on location, it typically costs anywhere from $10 to $15). It is possible to take your own photograph but there are dozens of different regulations on the actual image so it is best to have the post office take care of it.

    • 3

Pay the application fee in either cash or check (credit and debit cards are not accepted). The application fee for anyone over 16 is $75; if you're under 16, the cost is $60 (as of May 2010).

    • 4

Submit the information and a copy of your birth certificate and Social Security card to the post office, pay for shipping, and the passport information is mailed out. It takes several weeks (more during the summer months as it is the peak travel season) to receive the passport back in the mail.
