How to Go From Sharm to Luxor, Egypt

The distance between two of Egypt's top tourist attractions, Sharm el-Sheikh and Luxor, spans hundreds of miles of sea and desert. Outside of taking a direct flight, connecting between the two cities requires a detour across the Suez Canal or a combination of two modes of transport. While air and ferry routes may be faster, visitors to Egypt should consider rerouting to Cairo first to enjoy the classic train journey along the Nile to Luxor.

Take the ferry and the bus. To avoid the long bumpy road and routine checkpoints, board an ultra-fast ferry to whisk you from Sharm el-Sheikh to another of Egypt's resort towns, Hurghada, along Egypt's mainland Red Sea Coast. Ferries take 1 1/2 hours and leave four times a week, costing US$44. From the resort town of Hurghada there are eight daily buses departing for Luxor's main bus station, Sharia al-Karnak. The trip takes five hours and costs about US$6.

Take the bus. If you have the extra time and are willing to endure the 15-hour bus journey, book a seat on the direct bus route from Sharm to Luxor. The cost is about US$20.

Take the bus and the train. Many buses leave each day from Sharm to Cairo, taking about six hours and costing around US$12. From Cairo, the Abela Egypt Sleeping Train (US$53-74) as well as the 980, 996 and 1902 trains (first and second class fares ranging from US$9-16), connect Cairo's Ramses Station with Midan al-Mahatta, situated right in the heart of Luxor. These trains run daily, with the Abela, 996 and 1902 leaving Cairo each night and the 980 departing each morning.
