Where Is the Sphinx Located on a Map?

The Great Sphinx is perhaps one of the most recognizable and intriguing landmarks in the world. It captivates scores of travelers every year and continues to provoke scientific and academic theories about its history and purpose.
  1. Basics

    • The Great Sphinx is located in Giza which is a city just southwest of Cairo. Most conventional maps will not necessarily show the Sphinx but instead a circle for the city of Giza. If you are able to find Cairo, the capital, notice that it lies on the east bank of the Nile river. Giza, and thus the Sphinx, lies right to the West on the river's opposite bank.

    Maps of Giza

    • If you are examining a map of Giza, the pyramid complex is at the southwestern corner barely beyond the outskirts of the city. The monuments will appear in small clusters scattered throughout the complex (see Resources). You will see the Cairo Road intersect the site. To the immediate south of the road are two monuments. The Sphinx is the bottom right of the two.

    Exact Coordinates

    • If you want to find the specific map coordinates of the Sphinx, there are estimates as to its exact longitude and latitude. Figures given by Cynthia Kirkeby at "Class Brain" claim the Sphinx is situated at 31° 8' 31" longitude and 29° 58' 31" latitude. This will help you isolate the Sphinx's position on a basic atlas or road map.
