Five Officially Recognized Religions in China

State-Recognized Faiths in the PRC

1. Buddhism – ~185M adherents; Mahayana dominant, integrated with Chinese culture since 1st century CE.
2. Taoism – Indigenous philosophy/religion emphasizing harmony with the Tao (Laozi, 6th c. BCE).
3. Confucianism – Ethical/political system (Confucius, 6th c. BCE) shaping social values; often practiced alongside other faiths.
4. Islam – ~20M followers; introduced 7th century CE via Silk Road; Hui, Uyghur, Kazakh communities.
5. Christianity – ~50–60M (Protestant & Catholic); arrived 16th century; rapid growth since 1980s.

These five are the only religions legally permitted to operate openly; others face restrictions.
