What natural resource allowed the civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to thrive?

The development of great civilizations in both Egypt and Mesopotamia was made possible by the Nile and Tigris and Euphrates rivers. While Mesopotamia had to deal with the flooding patterns and the silting up of these rivers, these very same events also brought fertile soil and a ready source of water for these otherwise hot, dry regions.
