During the 19th century, Germany was the leading producer of such dolls. The city of Sonneberg, in the Thuringian Forest, was the centre of the doll-making industry. The dolls were made from porcelain and were often dressed in traditional Chinese costumes.
The name "China doll" is thought to have originated from the fact that the dolls were imported to Europe via China. The Chinese merchants would often add decorative touches to the dolls, such as painting their faces and adding hair.
Today, China dolls are still produced in Germany as well as in other countries, including China.
