How to Identify a Sonoran Desert Snake

The Sonoran Desert sidewinder is a type of rattlesnake found in Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. They are of small stature, but are still considered dangerous. Although fatalities from a bite by the Sonoran Desert sidewinder are rare, their venom is still strong enough to require amputation to extremities in some cases. It is important to be able to identify the sidewinder to avoid a bite.

      Look for the snake's unique side-winding movement over the desert sand. This will be the first giveaway that you have found a Sonoran Desert sidewinder.

      Look for an orbit-shaped horn, which will be located above both eyes. The snakes are usually between 12 to 18 inches long when adults and between 5 to 8 inches long as babies.

      Determine the coloring. This species is light in color. They are tan, cream, sandy or gray and have dark patches on their backs. These patches are usually dark gray. They also have a dark eye strip, which extends back along the head.
