Dutch Immigration to Australia

The Netherlands is a major source country for immigration into Australia. In June 2009, Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) estimated the number of Australian residents born in the Netherlands to be 90,312.
  1. Features

    • The median age of Dutch-born people who live in Australia is 61.8, and there are 105.8 males for every 100 Dutch females, according to the 2006 census. An average Dutch household in Australia consists of two people, making the Dutch one of the migrant groups with the smallest average household size in Australia. This is comparable to migrants from the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece and Germany.

    Location

    • Large portions of the immigrant populations in Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania are Dutch. In Tasmania, a 2006 DIAC survey found that 2,431 individuals (4.8 percent of the population) are from the Netherlands. The same survey found that 7,835 Dutch make up 2.5 percent of the population in South Australia, and 15,228 Dutch make up 2.2 percent of the Queensland population.

    Citizens

    • During 2007-2008, DIAC granted citizenship to 689 Dutch citizens. In June 2009, the DIAC estimated the number of Dutch citizens living unlawfully in Australia to be 660.
