This article focuses only on applications for immigration. The process for applying for temporary visas differs slightly. Applicants for permanent immigration must fall into one of several categories: spouses, fiance(e)s or long-term partners of Australian citizens; adopted or biological children of Australian citizens; parents or other family members of Australian citizens; permanent employees being sponsored by approved Australian businesses; younger workers with special skills or experience that will contribute to the Australian economy; and individuals already invested financially in Australian businesses. Individuals who do not fall into one of these categories may apply for special migration, which includes distinguished talent, or people who have gained so much international renown that their residency would positively affect the country's culture; former residents who spent at least half of their childhood in Australia; and non-citizens who served in the Australian armed forces. The government also grants immigration for humanitarian reasons, such as to refugees seeking political asylum.
Applicants may fall into more than one category but should only fill out one application, in order of priority as listed above. For example, if you are married to an Australian citizen and also have a job offer, apply for spousal immigration first. Once you have determined which category best fits your situation, obtain the appropriate form from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The department website is listed in the reference section below. You can fill out some applications online, as well as obtain the latest booklets and updates on immigration laws. Be sure to fill out the application thoroughly and provide any requested materials, including payment for fees. Most importantly, meet any deadlines and respond to inquiries from the department as soon as possible.
Once you have completed your application, immigration agents will process the forms, conduct a thorough background check, and possibly even require a personal interview with you or people you may have listed as references. If you are currently a non-resident applying for immigration status, the government may issue a temporary visa so that you can reside in the country while agents process your application. You will receive a permanent visa once your immigration application is approved. If rejected, you may be able to appeal, based on the criteria for rejection. Be aware that any criminal convictions, unpaid debts or falsehoods discovered on your application may negatively affect your ability to immigrate to Australia.
