Skilled Occupations List for Australian Immigration

For emigrants to Australia who don't know if they qualify for a work visa, Australia's "Skilled Occupation List" is available to help. Australia has a visa points system for immigrants to pass before applying for work visas. They must choose their job from the "Skilled Occupation List" to find the point value assigned to it. In 2010, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship published four different lists for four types of work visas.
  1. Skilled Occupation List - Schedule 1

    • Schedule 1 of the "Skilled Occupation List" is a list of job titles for applicants who submitted their applications before July 1, 2010, when the lists were updated. It includes a complete alphabetical listing of jobs, from child care coordinator to wood turner. Each job has a point value attached to it, depending on whether the job is in demand in Australia. For instance, interpreters, engineers and hairdressers earn 60 points for their specialized jobs, while stockbrokers and real estate agents earn 40 points.

Skilled Occupation List - Schedule 2

    • Schedule 2 applies to previous visa holders or those who applied for skilled independent work visas before February 8, 2010, and who are now applying for new work visas. This includes people who held student visas as of February 8, 2010. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship states that it is valid for applications submitted through the year 2012.

The list has two job titles for each skilled occupation, showing the old Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) and the new Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZCO). This allows every applicant to find her job title and transition from the previous "Skilled Occupation List" to the new. For instance, according to the ASCO list, a personnel officer would file as a human resource adviser on the new ANZCO list.

Skilled Occupation List - Schedule 3

    • The Department of Immigration and Citizenship states that Schedule 3 is for all general skilled immigration applicants. This means first-time work visa applicants should refer to Schedule 3 to find their occupation on the list. This list is pages shorter than the Schedule 1 and 2 lists. However, it includes several fields, including nursing, dentistry, engineering, carpentry and teaching, among others.

Skilled Occupation List - Schedule 4

    • Schedule 4 applies to visa applicants with pre-arranged jobs in Australia. Those with job offers apply as sponsored workers, as the state or region is sponsoring them to move to Australia for work. This list of jobs is long and varied, with unique jobs such as horse riding instructor, massage therapist and floor finisher. It reflects the fact that immigrants with pre-arranged jobs are guaranteed work and will not drain the Australian economy; they are visa applicants whose situation ensures that they will find economic success after they move.
