Chilean Immigration to Australia

Australia, a multicultural country, has a population of 21,395,228 as of June 2008. According to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, 5,449,331 of these residents were born overseas. However, only a small portion of the migrant population in Australia originally hailed from Chile.
  1. Features

    • According to DIAC data, 27,903 individuals who reside in Australia were born in Chile as of June 2008. Of these, the median age is 46 years, and there are 94.3 Chilean males for every 100 Chilean females in Australia.

    Work and Holiday

    • Australia has special visa arrangements with Chile to allow Chileans to work in Australia for up to 12 months. To get the work and holiday visa, Chileans have to have a certain level of English proficiency, tertiary qualifications and support from the Chilean government.

    Citizenship

    • During 2007-2008, the DIAC granted Australian citizenship to 780 Chileans. While these individuals can retain their Chilean nationality, Chile does not officially recognize dual nationality. As a result, Australian/Chilean dual nationals who encounter problems while traveling to Chile might not be able to get help from the Australian embassy, depending on the individual case.
