DIAC offers the migrant visa for family members of Australians and eligible New Zealand citizens. Former Australian permanent residents and former Australian citizens can also obtain a migrant visa to return to Australia.
Once DIAC issues a migrant visa, the holder might have to enter Australia before a certain date or risk losing his visa. For example, the former resident visa and partner visa specify a date after which the holder can't use the visa. The dependents of the primary visa holder have to arrive with the primary visa holder or or after he gets to Australia.
In some cases, for example with the partner visa, the visa holder might enter Australia on a temporary visa while DIAC processes the permanent visa. During the process, the visa holder has to notify the visa office for any changes in address or relevant circumstances--for example, if the partner visa applicant's relationship with his Australian partner ends.
