Indonesian Migration to Australia

A major source country of migration into Australia, the number of Indonesian-born Australian residents is 64,567, according to estimates from Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The median age of these residents is 31.9, with male-to-female ratio of about 4:5.
  1. Family

    • While many Indonesians also enter Australia using other visas, they make up a large portion of the family stream migrants. According to DIAC data, Indonesia is the eighth most prominent source country of family migration. In the one year before June 30, 2009, 1,268 Indonesians entered Australia using a visa based on their family relationship with Australians. Of these, 942 were partners of Australians, and 112 were children of Australians.

    Humanitarian

    • Many Indonesian citizens also apply for the protection visa. From 2006 to 2009, about 200 Indonesians apply for a protection visa each year, placing them in the top 10 of countries whose citizens apply for this particular type of visa. However, the DIAC does not grant the protection visa to many Indonesian citizens, and the country is not included in the top 10 countries whose citizens get protection visas.

    Unlawful

    • Because of Indonesia's proximity to Australia, lack of immigration controls in Indonesia could affect Australia. During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, Australia provided $6.862 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to help improve the management of irregular migrants in Indonesia. In June 2009, the DIAC estimated that 2,360 Indonesians live unlawfully in Australia.
