Go to the official Great Southern Railway Web site and select 'The Overland' train, which will take you from Melbourne to Adelaide (see Resources below).
Go to the 'Compare Service Levels' page to choose the class of ticket you're interested in buying. There are two levels, Red Kangaroo and Gold Kangaroo, based on amenities and levels of service.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for 'The Ghan' train, which will take you from Adelaide to Alice Springs.
Go to the 'Bookings' page to purchase your tickets. On the first line, select 'The Overland,' and under it, select 'The Ghan.' If you have questions, problems or simply prefer the phone, you can call the sales office within Australia at 13 21 47, or internationally at +011 61 8 8213 4592.
Be sure to arrive at the Melbourne Spencer Street Station at least one hour before your train departs.
Bring a camera. Not only is the scenery stunning, but it is very likely that you will see some indigenous wildlife.
Prepare according to your ticket class. Red Kangaroo class passengers will need cash for meals, snacks and drinks, as well as a blanket and pillow for sleeping.
