By: The Dominion of Canada
Process of Formation:
1. Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia: The first elected legislative assembly of the Red River Settlement was known as the Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia. It was formed on December 8, 1869, during the Red River Rebellion.
2. Red River Colony: The Red River Colony, consisting of the Red River Settlement and its surrounding area, was part of the Hudson's Bay Company's territories. However, in 1869, tension between the local population and the Hudson's Bay Company led to the Red River Rebellion.
3. Negotiations and Transfer: Representatives of the Red River Colony, led by Louis Riel, negotiated with the Canadian government for the colony to enter the Canadian confederation. These negotiations resulted in the Manitoba Act of 1870.
4. Province of Manitoba: On May 12, 1870, Queen Victoria signed the Manitoba Act, officially establishing the Province of Manitoba as the fifth province of Canada.
5. Enlargement: The initial boundaries of the Province of Manitoba included only a small area around the Red River Settlement. Over time, Manitoba expanded to include its current territory.
Therefore, Manitoba was founded on May 12, 1870, and its formation was the result of negotiations between the Red River Colony and the Dominion of Canada.
