EGR Valve Location & Removal: 2003 GMC Yukon XL

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve on the 2003 Yukon XL (Vortec 5.3L / 6.0L) sits on the driver's side rear of the intake manifold, near the firewall.

Step-by-Step Access & Removal

1. Remove engine cover (2 plastic clips — pry gently with flathead).
2. Locate throttle body — front left (driver's side) of intake.
3. Follow large intake hose from throttle body rearward along intake manifold.
4. EGR valve = metal cylinder (approx. 3" dia × 4" long) with electrical connector & vacuum line, mounted on intake manifold runner near firewall.
5. Disconnect: Electrical connector (tab release), vacuum line (pull off).
6. Remove 2 bolts (10 mm or 13 mm socket, extension + swivel helpful).
7. Pull valve out — may stick; twist gently.
8. Clean mating surface — scraper, brake cleaner, new gasket.

Pro Tips

• Carbon buildup is the #1 failure mode — clean passages with wire brush / carb cleaner while valve out.
• Test before replace: Apply vacuum (hand pump) — valve should hold & open smoothly. Command with scan tool (bidirectional control).
• Torque spec: 18–22 Nm (13–16 ft-lb) on reinstall.
• Reset PCM: Clear codes (P0401, P0404, P1404, P1406) after repair; drive cycle to ready.

Common Symptoms of Failure

• Rough idle, stalling at stops
• Pinging / knock under load
• Failed emissions (NOx high)
• Check Engine: P0401 (insufficient flow), P0404 (circuit range), P1406 (pintle position)

Access is tight but doable with 3/8" drive, extensions, swivel, and patience. Cold engine only.
