Responsibilities of the Premier of Ontario

The Premier of Ontario is the head of government of Canada's most populous province. Key responsibilities:

1. Head of Government

• Sets policy agenda and priorities
• Chairs Cabinet (Executive Council) — selects ministers, allocates portfolios
• Directs Ontario Public Service (60,000+ staff) via Clerk of the Executive Council

2. Legislative Leadership

• Leader of governing party in Legislative Assembly (MPP)
• Government House Leader manages legislative calendar
• Delivers Throne Speech (written by Premier's Office) opening each session
• Must maintain confidence of Assembly (majority or supply agreements)

3. Fiscal & Economic Stewardship

• With Finance Minister, sets provincial budget ($200B+)
• Economic development, trade, investment attraction
• Labour market, immigration (joint with federal), infrastructure

4. Intergovernmental Relations

• Represents Ontario at First Ministers' Conferences (PM + Premiers)
• Chairs Council of the Federation (rotating)
• Negotiates federal-provincial transfers (health, social, equalization)
• Manages Canada-US border issues (Great Lakes, auto, energy)

5. Crisis Leadership

• Public health emergencies (COVID-19), natural disasters, infrastructure failures
• Emergency Management Ontario coordination

• Party leader — fundraising, candidate recruitment, election strategy
• Patronage appointments (agencies, boards, courts, Senate recommendations)
