• Donner Pass: Sierra Nevada crossing. Spectacular; severe winter weather (chain controls Oct–Apr).
• Truckee River Canyon – Scenic, paralleled by UP railroad (Zephyr route).
• Sacramento Valley – Flat, agricultural, into metro Sacramento.

Alternatives

• US-50 (Loneliest Road): South of Tahoe, over Echo Summit. Scenic, slower, less truck traffic.
• Amtrak California Zephyr: Daily, 2 hrs 20 min, stunning views.
• Flight: RNO–SMF 45 min (not time-efficient with airport overhead).

Winter Warning

Carry chains Nov–Apr. Check Caltrans QuickMap / NDOT. Closures common at Donner. Allow 4+ hrs in storms.
