Why was Halifax built where it was?

The area around Halifax Harbour has supported various settlements for thousands of years due to its favourable environment. The Miꞌkmaq people recognized the rich resources of the region, including bountiful fisheries, abundant wildlife, and fertile land, and established numerous seasonal encampments along the harbour.

In 1749, the British were motivated to establish a permanent settlement in the area by several factors. They were seeking a strategic location to strengthen their presence in North America and to counter French influence in the region. The Halifax area offered a well-protected harbour, which could serve as a naval base and a gateway to the Atlantic Ocean.

Additionally, the British recognized the economic potential of the region due to its natural resources and proximity to fishing grounds and trade routes. The establishment of Halifax marked the beginning of the British colony of Nova Scotia and served as a hub for trade, transportation, and military activities.
