St. Augustine is on the Atlantic coast of Northeast Florida, about 40 miles south of Jacksonville. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous United States. Its historic district, Castillo de San Marcos, and Flagler College anchor a vibrant tourism economy.
