The island of Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is located approximately 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from the coast of California.

Tahiti is roughly triangular in shape, with its longest side measuring about 64 kilometers (40 miles). The island's total area is approximately 1,045 square kilometers (403 square miles).

In comparison to other well-known islands, Tahiti is slightly larger than the island of Maui in Hawaii, but smaller than the Big Island of Hawaii. It is also about the same size as the Spanish island of Mallorca.
