What are 3 main traditions of vanuatu?

1. Land Diving/Nangol

The most famous custom in Vanuatu is the famous and dangerous land diving on Pentecost Island, where jumpers tie vines around their ankles and leap from wooden towers with a jump off point over 20 meters high. This age-old ritual celebrates the new yam season and pays tribute to the ancestors with the height of the jump determining the future of the yam harvest.

2. Sand Drawings/Vanuatu Art

Ni-Vanuatu have developed intricate and beautiful sand drawings using multi-coloured sand laid on a flat surface over large areas. The drawings have a ritual and ceremonial purpose and are believed to have been introduced to the islands by the god Tagaro as well as being used to convey traditional stories, local history and cultural lore.

3. Tam Tam

Traditional music is essential to Ni-Vanuatu life with drums and music playing at all gatherings including festivals and ceremonies. Different rhythms and tones for the drums are used to mark different events, for instance, the birth of a child or a passing of a family elder.
