What is an Arabian sultanate?

A sultanate is a Muslim country headed by a male monarch who is called a sultan. Several Muslim countries in the Arabian Peninsula are sultanates, including Oman and Brunei. Additionally, there are several former sultanates in the region that have since become republics, such as Yemen and Egypt.
