What did the settlers find when they first arrived in Puerto Rico?

When Christopher Columbus first arrived in Puerto Rico in 1493, he found the island inhabited by the Taíno people, an indigenous Arawakan-speaking people who had migrated there from South America. The Taíno were a peaceful and agrarian society who lived in villages along the coast and in the interior of the island. They had a well-developed culture and were skilled in agriculture, pottery, and weaving. The Taíno also had a rich religious and spiritual life and believed in a creator god named Yocahú.
