Anyone arriving in Jamaica must be able to show a passport which is valid for the entire length of their expected stay. If you intend to work in Jamaica, you must hold a permit from the Jamaican Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
Jamaicans drive on the left. In urban areas, the speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour (30 miles per hour) and 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) on highways. All drivers must carry a valid license---if you hold a North American license you can use it in Jamaica for up to three months.
Jamaican water is safe to drink and wash in, although many types of bottled water are also available.
The Jamaican currency is the dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. Its value varies, but in September 2010 one U.S. dollar bought around 86 Jamaican dollars. Both currencies use the same $ symbol and you should make sure you know whether any price you are quoted is in Jamaican or U.S. dollars.
