How do coral atolls form volcanoes?

Coral atolls do not form volcanoes. Coral atolls are formed when coral reefs grow on top of submerged volcanoes or seamounts. The combination of coral growth and the subsidence of the underlying volcano or seamount creates the shallow lagoon and surrounding reef that characterize coral atolls.
