Why is the North Sea so named?

The North Sea is named after its location relative to the landmasses that surround it. It is situated to the north of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The name "North Sea" has been in use since at least the 14th century, when it was first recorded in Middle English as "Norðsœ".
