Who explored the entire Mississippi to Gulf of Mexico?

In 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed in present-day Florida and began an expedition to explore the interior of North America. Over the next three years, de Soto and his men travelled over 6,000 miles and were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
