Central America's Caribbean Coast: Six Nations with Caribbean Shoreline
All seven Central American nations have coastlines, but only six touch the Caribbean Sea. From north to south:
- Belize — Entire eastern coast (386 km) on Caribbean; Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO)
- Guatemala — Short Caribbean coast (148 km) at Gulf of Honduras; Puerto Barrios, Livingston
- Honduras — Long Caribbean coast (644 km); Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja); major ports: Puerto Cortés, La Ceiba
- Nicaragua — Extensive Caribbean coast (450 km); "Mosquito Coast"; Corn Islands; Puerto Cabezas
- Costa Rica — Caribbean coast (212 km); Limón province; Tortuguero canals; Puerto Limón
- Panama — Caribbean coast (1,288 km including islands); Bocas del Toro, San Blas (Guna Yala), Colón (Caribbean entrance to Canal)
The Exception
El Salvador — Only Central American country with no Caribbean coastline. Entire 307 km coast is on the Pacific Ocean.
Regional Significance
The Caribbean coast hosts:
- Major ports for regional trade (Puerto Cortés = Central America's busiest)
- Tourism hubs (Belize Barrier Reef, Roatán, Bocas del Toro, San Blas)
- Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous cultures (Garífuna, Miskito, Guna, Creole)
- Hurricane vulnerability (June-November)
- Caribbean Community (CARICOM) connections—Belize is a member; others engage via SICA
