Three Seas Completely Enclosed by Land: Aral, Caspian, Dead Sea
These three "seas" are technically **endorheic saline lakes**—no outlet to the world ocean. Each is a unique geological and ecological story.
1. Aral Sea — Central Asia (Kazakhstan / Uzbekistan)
- Formerly: 4th largest lake (68,000 km²).
- Now: ~8,000 km² (10% remain) — **ecocide by Soviet irrigation** (Amudarya/Syrdarya diverted for cotton).
- Split: North Aral (Kazakhstan, recovering via Kok-Aral Dam) + South Aral (Uzbekistan, mostly dry).
- Legacy: Toxic dust storms (pesticides), collapsed fishery, climate shift.
2. Caspian Sea — Europe/Asia Border (5 Countries)
- World's largest inland water body: 371,000 km² (larger than Japan).
- Border states: **Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan**.
- Salinity: ~1.2% (1/3 seawater) — north fresher, south saltier.
- Resources: **Huge oil/gas** (Kashagan, Tengiz); **90% world's caviar** (beluga sturgeon — critically endangered).
- Level fluctuation: -28 m (1977) → -26.5 m (2023); climate-driven.
- Legal status: 2018 Convention: "Special legal status" — not lake, not sea; sovereign rights + freedom of navigation.
3. Dead Sea — Jordan Rift Valley (Israel / Jordan / West Bank)
- Lowest land point on Earth: **-430 m** (surface); dropping ~1 m/yr.
- Hyper-saline: **34% salinity** (9.6× ocean) — **no macroscopic life** (only archaea, algae).
- Mineral wealth: Potash, bromine, magnesium, salt — major industry (Dead Sea Works, Arab Potash).
- Therapeutic tourism: Buoyancy, mud, UV-filtered sun — psoriasis, arthritis treatment.
- Crisis: Jordan River diversion (95% flow lost) + mineral evaporation ponds → **level drop, sinkholes (7,000+), shore recession**.
- Red Sea–Dead Sea Canal proposed (desalination + brine refill) — stalled.
🔬 Why "Sea"?
Historical: large, saline, navigable (Caspian), or biblical (Dead Sea). Scientific: **endorheic lakes**. The Aral's tragedy, the Caspian's wealth, the Dead Sea's extremes—each teaches the **consequence of water balance disruption**.
