What is an inland sea?

An inland sea is a body of saltwater that is almost entirely surrounded by land, but still has a wide connection to an ocean. For example, the Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Red Sea is connected to the Indian Ocean through the Bab el-Mandab strait. Inland seas are often found in shallow basins that have been partially cut off from the ocean, such as the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
