Hans Joachim Morgenthau (February 17, 1904 – July 19, 1980) was a German-American political scientist of Jewish origin who is considered to be one of the most important and influential scholars of international relations in the twentieth century. He is best known for his book Politics among Nations, published in 1948, in which he laid out a realist approach to international relations theory, arguing that nation-states are the primary actors in international relations and that their behavior is primarily determined by the pursuit of power.
